What Students are Saying about USMLE Tutoring with Step 101

"I started working with Dr. Hiett after multiple failed attempts at STEP 1. He was nonjudgmental about my previous struggles and very conscientious about seeking out new methods to effectively study exam material and develop testing strategies. Dr. Hiett encouraged me to try new STEP 1 prep resources and helped me utilize the question bank that best suited my needs. We also worked together to establish an efficient study schedule and met regularly to discuss my progress. In general, my experience working with Dr. Hiett boosted my confidence in myself, my command of the material, and my readiness to sit for the exam even after having difficulty with prior attempts. I ultimately passed my exam and am grateful for the guidance and direction he provided me!"

How is tutoring with Step 101 different?

Step 101 is different than most USMLE tutoring companies because of how I approach tutoring. Most of your success on USMLE exams will come down to how well you know material. As a result of this, most tutoring companies and prep courses spend significant time teaching students content related to various organ systems. This material is incredibly important, but it's not the only thing you need to succeed on USMLE exams.

Step 101 takes a slightly different approach by focusing the majority of tutoring sessions on strategies and techniques that you can utilize to work through USMLE style questions. I believe focusing on strategy is a more efficient way to improve your scores. If you have strategies in place that help you work through USMLE style questions, you can use those strategies on every single question. If you spend tutoring sessions working on the student's understanding of cardiology, then that knowledge will only help the student on cardiology questions. This approach allows us to accomplish significant improvements in fewer tutoring sessions, saving you money. It would be incredibly helpful to have a tutor work thorough all the content areas on USMLE exams, but this would take many hours and cost you a lot of money.

How Much does USMLE Tutoring with Step 101 cost?

The cost for a 1 hour session with Step 101 is $125. While this may seem expensive at first glance, you will see that the average price for most companies is between $175-250 per hour. I acknowledge that this price is still expensive. If you don't have the means to pay for private tutoring, then you might consider starting with the Step 101 book. The goal with the book was to bring the private tutoring experience to students in a way that was more affordable and accessible. The book can be found by clicking here.

How Much Can I Expect my Score to Improve with Step 101?

This is a very difficult question to answer. Every student is starting with a different knowledge base. There are many variables that give me an idea of how much you MIGHT improve such as performance on preclinical exams, performance on prior standardized tests and performance on USMLE practice exams. If you are interested in working with Step 101 I would encourage you to schedule a free 30 minute consultation where we can discuss what kind of score improvement you can expect. Do you offer any guarantees?

Step 101 does not offer any guarantees. After many years in the tutoring industry I have found that most guarantees from large test prep companies are very restrictive. Students typically only qualify for the guarantee if you meet extensive criteria that are difficult for most students to achieve. If a company is offering you a guarantee I would recommend you read the fine print before committing to avoid potential issues later on.

While I don't offer guarantees, I do want you to know that I am committed to your success. I have worked with students at free or discounted rates if they don't achieve the desired results on USMLE exams.

If I Failed a USMLE Exam Can You Help Me?

Absolutely! Many of the students I work with have failed USMLE exams in the past. If you have failed a USMLE exam then it may be helpful to read this article. I have never met a medical student that wasn't smart enough to pass USMLE exams. Sometimes a few adjustments to your study strategy and test taking approach can make a dramatic difference!
